Carolyn was Samantha in disguise.
Endora had turned Darrin into an old man. To explain him to the Tates, who saw Samantha and Darrin at the movies, the Stephenses told them that Darrin was Grover Stephens, Darrin's grandfather.
Seeing a matchmaking opportunity, Louise set Grover up with her Aunt Millicent. In order to rescue Darrin from Millicent's unwanted affections, Samantha turned herself into elderly Carolyn and posed as Grover's wife. This shocked Millicent and Louise, but secretly impressed Larry, and the Tates and Millicent left the house.
