Daddy Does His Thing is the twenty-seventh episode of the fifth season and the 167th episode of the Bewitched series. The episode was completed by February 25, 1969.
Plot[]
Maurice turns Darrin into a jackass after his son-in-law stubbornly refuses to accept his birthday gift, an enchanted lighter that allows Darrin to have witchcraft powers. Next morning, Samantha recruits Endora to help her find Maurice. They find him in a Paris café and argue with him to bring him back to undo the spell. However, the nosy Mrs. Kravitz discovers the donkey and does what she believes is her neighborhood and public duty when she calls the animal shelter to take away the beast. After Samantha retrieves Darrin and both get back home, Maurice barely manages to reverse the spell and, when he has difficulty doing so, zaps a chess board and plays with the animal, suggesting that their concentration will make the process easier. At the end, Abner Kravitz comes to check if, as Gladys assures him, the jackass knows how to play chess and Maurice transforms himself into one to engage Abner in a game.
Trivia[]
General[]
- Dick York appeared briefly in this episode. He collapsed on the set during filming and was rushed to a hospital, where it was decided he would leave the show. The script was then rewritten and filming completed weeks later. The original script was retained and filmed as Season Six's two-part episode "Daddy Comes for a Visit" and "Darrin the Warlock". In his published memoirs titled The Seesaw Girl and Me, when Dick York described the original script of this episode, it sounded like the script of what eventually became Season Six's two-part episode.
- In his published memoirs, Dick York said that when he collapsed, he was sitting on scaffolding with Maurice Evans. The scene was supposed to be Darrin and Maurice floating in the air. He said he had not been feeling good anyway, and with all the light checks and stuff, it got him really sick and he passed out. He was then rushed to hospital.
- Due to the few scenes filmed by Dick York before his abrupt departure and the rewriting of the script, the "special surprise" Samantha was going to reveal to Darrin at the beginning of this episode was not revealed. It was presumably the announcement that she was pregnant, which she told Darrin over the phone in the next episode of Season Five, "Samantha's Good News".
