Biography[]
Dort Clark was an American actor. He was born Daugherty Webb Clark on October 1, 1917 in Wellington, Kansas.
He graduated from Wellington High Scholl in 1935 and earned a degree in education from Emporia State Teachers College in 1940.
His acting career started at the Civic Theatre in Erie Pensylvania, in the summer of 1940. He made his Broadway debut in 1942 in Irving Brecher and Manuel Seff's play Sweet Charity. Then he played in nearly a dozen productions, including Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's musical South Pacific (1949-1954) and Mary Chase's play Harvey (1970).
Between 1948 and 1977, he appeared (often playing police officers or military) in more then sixty television series, including The Philco Television Playhouse, The Clock, The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre, The Web, Studio One, Three Steps to Heaven, Mike Hammer, Armstrong Circle Theatre, The Defenders, Car 54, Where Are You?, The Virginian, The Donna Reed Show, Mickey, The Munsters, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, The Young Marrieds, The F.B.I., It's About Time, Gomer Pyle: USMC, The Fugitive, Daniel Boone, The Monkees, Get Smart, The Flying Nun, The Wild Wild West, The Good Guys, Dan August, Ironside, The Partridge Family, Night Gallery, Cannon, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Feather and Father Gang.
Clark's film credits included Vincente Minnelli's 1960 Bells Are Ringing (where he reprized his role as Inspector Barnes from the Broadway production), Jack Smight's 1964 I'd Rather Be Rich, Ralph Nelson's 1964 Fate Is the Hunter, Otto Preminger's 1965 In Harm's Way, Tony Richardson's 1965 The Loved One, Paul Bogart's 1971 Skin Game, and Woody Allen's 1972 Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask.
He returned to live in his birth town, Wellington, Kansas, when he retired from acting in 1977.
Dort Clark married Marilyn Sable in 1944. They had four children. The couple divorce. He married Louise Spangler Edwards in 1974.
Dort Clark died after an extended illness of diabetes and cancer on March 30, 1989 in Wellington, Kansas. He was 71. At the Hawks Funeral Home in Wellington, a memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
