Elmer Modlin played Charles Gilbert in "Going Ape" and Head Waiter in "The Phrase Is Familiar" (1969-1970).

Biography[]

Elmer Modlin was an American actor. He was born Elmer Nelson Modlin, Jr. on January 23, 1925 in Belhaven, North Carolina.

Throughout his career, he was sometimes credited as Elmer Modling or Elmel Modlin.

He started his television acting career in December 1964, playing Jury Foreman in the episode "Governor John M. Slaton" (season one, episode six) of the series Profiles in Courage. He appeared in minor roles on a dozen of television series, including The Fugitive, Run for Your Life, The Felony Squad, Judd for the Defense, and Mannix. He also had an uncredited role in Roman Polanski's 1968 Rosemary's Baby.

In search of better opportunities, he left the United States in 1972 with his family for Europe, settling in Madrid, Spain in 1975. He worked in the European film industry from then on, most often in Spanish films, but occasionally returning to America for filming.

Modlin's film credits included Alan J. Pakula's 1973 Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing, Roberto Bodegas's 1974 Los nuevos españoles, Eloy de la Iglesia's 1978 El diputado, Marcello Aliprandi's 1982 Morte in Vaticano, and Éric Rochat's 1984 Histoire d'O: Chapitre 2.

He also appeared in Simon Langton's 1987 American television film Casanova, and the 1989 French television miniseries Le Grand Secret.

He was married to painter, sculptor and photographer Margaret Modlin, née McRae Marley, in 1949 in North Carolina, until her death on October 28, 1998 in Madrid, Spain. They had one son, Elmer Nelson Modlin III, born February 19, 1952 in Los Angeles, California, who also became an actor, and died of a heart attack on June 3, 2002 in Madrid, Spain.

Elmer Modlin died on May 6, 2003 in Madrid, Spain. He was 78.

Trivia[]

In 2006, the Modlin family was the subject of a documentary by Sergio Oksman entitled A Story for the Modlins.
