Herbert Winters played uncredited roles in twenty-seven episodes of Bewitched, He was also Dick York's stand-in in several episodes.

Biography[]

Born Herbert Schwartz on August 26, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, he soon after moved with his family to Wilmington, Delaware.

As a teenager, "Herb" opened a dance studio in Wilmington, but later pursued his dream of becoming a professional actor and moved to Hollywood, California. He began appearing in uncredited roles in films, including Max Ophüls' 1948 Letter from an Unknown Woman, Vincente Minnelli's 1951 An American in Paris, Charles Vidor's 1955 Love Me or Leave Me, and Mervin LeRoy's 1959 The FBI Story.

He changed his last name to Winters and gained notoriety working for several years in the 1960s and 1970s on television series, most notably on three hit shows: Bewitched, Laverne and Shirley and Days of Our Lives. During the show's hiatus, Herbert Winters appeared in films and television commercials. He often adopted the pseudonym Gerald York as a result of being a stand-in for Dick York in several episodes of Bewitched.

Herbert Winters was well respected in Hollywood circles and was elected president of his actors union guild with the support of Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery.

When he retired from acting in late 1980s, he began investing in multi-family real estate holdings.

Herbert Winters died on July 4, 2015 at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California. He was 90.
