Biography[]
Irwin Charone was an American character actor. He was born Irwin Harold Charone to John and Jeanette Charone on September 14, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois.
During World War II, he served for three years with the Army Signal Corps. He then prepared for an acting career at the Goodman Theatre School, which is now part of DePaul University, the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Theatre Wing of New York. After his studies, he resided in Manhattan for most of his life before moving to Millburn, New Jersey.
His acting career began when he landed roles in summer stock and regional theater productions. In the summer of 1963, he toured in the Broadway musical Carousel.
Charone appeared on television beginning in March 1955 with a small role in the Studio One episode, "A Favor for Sam" (season eight, episode twenty-five), alongside Bewitched guest star John Fiedler. He did not return in television series until October 1962 in the Hazel episode "Barney Hatfield, Where Are You?", guided by Bewitched director William D. Russell. Between 1963 and 1974, he played guest roles in numerous series, including 77 Sunset Strip, The Farmer's Daughter, My Favorite Martian, McHale's Navy, Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Donna Reed Show, Burke's Law, The Munsters, My Mother the Car, Gidget, The Monkees, Green Acres, The Lucy Show, Get Smart, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, and in five episodes of Here's Lucy, as many as in Bewitched.
He also played minor roles in several motion pictures, including Gene Saks' 1969 Cactus Flower, Robert Stevenson's 1974 Herbie Rides Again, and Woody Allen's 1997 Deconstructing Harry.
He retired from acting in 2002.
He married Eileen Schauler in November 9, 1954. They had one child, a son, Jeffrey Charone.
Irwin Charone died on September 28, 2016 in Maplewood Essex County, New Jersey. He was 93.
