Carlotta Mercedes Agnes McCambridge was an American actress who had a long career in radio, film, television and stage during which she especially excelled in portraying strong women. She won a best supporting actress Academy Award for her film debut in All the King’s Men (1949) and went on to prominent roles in such films as Johnny Guitar (1954), Giant (1956), Touch of Evil (1958) and Suddenly Last Summer (1959). She was never seen, however, in what was perhaps her best-known film role—the demon voice of the possessed child in The Exorcist (1973). In the early 1990s McCambridge took over the role of the stern grandmother in Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers, and by the time she left the play, she had performed it five-hundred sixty times on Broadway and on the road.[2]
