What Makes Darrin Run? is the twenty-first episode of the sixth season and the 191st episode of the Bewitched series. The episode was completed by December 11, 1969.

Plot[]

Endora casts a spell on Darrin, making him an ace of ambition after she finds out her son-in-law is taking his morning off to play golf. Endora is convinced that his lack of ambition explains the fact that the Stephenses still live in the same house since their marriage. At McMann & Tate, Darrin's new magical ambition seems to be paying off when it comes to Bob Braddock's account. Armed with personal information, Darrin impresses the sporting goods manufacturer and locks up the account. But that ambition also carries over internally within McMann & Tate. Buoyed by his success, Darrin tells Samantha they should have Howard McMann and his wife over for dinner and reveals his plan to climb the corporate ladder and take Larry's job. Samantha confronts Endora who admits what she is doing, but refuses to remove the spell to see if Darrin will become a multimillionaire. Samantha tells Darrin he is bewitched, but he does not listen. During dinner, she must fight with witchcraft what looks to be Darrin's new ambition of breaking up his and Larry's long friendship. Despite her magic, tensions rise. She freezes everyone and asks Endora to remove the spell. Even then, it may take a bit of time to get back to normal, but Mr. McMann comes to the conclusion that Darrin and Larry are a team that should not be broken up.

  • This episode is the first to feature Kasey Rogers' (Louise Tate) natural red hair. In previous episodes her black hair was a wig.
  • The title of this episode is a takeoff on the Budd Schulberg's 1941 novel What Makes Sammy Run? about the life of a Jewish boy born in New York, who early makes up his mind to escape the ghetto and climb the ladder of success by deception and betrayal.
